Waterfront Park and Esplanade

The Waterfront Park and Esplanade will provide free public access from the new science center to the Macao Tower, a distance of approximately 2km. The park area is defined on its northern edge by the new road system of Avenue Dr. Sun Yat-Sen that will feature an underground vehicular tunnel to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment along the waterfront. The water's edge has been remodeled to create an elegant sweeping landform that connects the waterfront activities. A small cove in the shape of a semi-circle surrounds the existing Kun Lam statue that projects into the sea, and creates oppor- tunities to view the monument from nearly every perspective including the open delta. A single line of royal palms will weave through the park embracing its key features, such as the restaurant, sculpture, inter-active water play area, and refreshments kiosk.

On the lower spa levels, the building presents itself as a solid, sculpted mass, enhancing the sense of privacy and exclusivity within the sanctuary. Its monolithic façade is punctuated by selective window slots, allowing dramatic shafts of light to penetrate deep into the inner sanctums of the spa and providing stunning northern views of the surrounding canyon from the interior pool areas.

The park has been programmed and designed to encourage multiple uses. At the eastern end of the esplanade an amphitheater is proposed. The amphitheater is positioned at the knuckle of the site affording great views up river towards the annual fireworks displays held in the estuary. It will provide opportunities for outdoor theater and music events particularly in the evening. The existing bridge from the Cultural Center will be adapted to fit the new design. The upper level of the bridge will cross the road and as it enters the park it will cut through a grove of bamboo. The elevated nature of the bridge will offer views over the park and across the water.

The bridge landing area will segue into three tai chi areas associated with a formal water garden and additional bamboo groves. The focus of the water garden is a stepped pyramid from which water will emanate, on a timer, every two to three minutes. The water will be pumped to the top of the pyramid that will stand just over 2m high. Water will cascade down the stepped pyramid turning into white water as it mixes with the air. As the water lands at the bottom of the pyramid it will send a pulse of water down each rill constructed from black polished granite. The cascading water will create a significant volume of sound within that part of the park attracting people to it.
